Day 3: Rapid City, South Dakota
Driving Time: 5 Hours (Stops in Chamberlain, 1880s Town, Badlands, and Wall – 320 Miles)
Morning: Mitchell → Chamberlain (1.5 hours)

Start the day early in Mitchell with a quick breakfast from your hotel or a local diner, then head west along I-90. This part of the drive provides views of the classic South Dakota prairie — wide skies, scattered farmsteads, and the rolling plains.

In Chamberlain, take a quick stop at the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center and the Dignity of Earth and Sky statue overlooking the Missouri River. The 50-foot-tall stainless-steel sculpture honors the courage and heritage of Native women. The scenic overlook provides photo opportunities for the river below.

Late Morning: Chamberlain → 1880 Town (1 hour)

Continue west toward 1880 Town, a unique roadside stop that feels like you’ve stepped straight into a Western movie set. Wander the wooden boardwalks, peek into the old saloon, and see the authentic film props from Dances with Wolves.

Grab a light lunch at the 1880 Town café, where you can try a bison burger or homemade pie before heading back on the road.

Afternoon: 1880 Town → Badlands National Park (45 minutes)

During this part of the drive, you will see the scenery shifting as you approach Badlands National Park — prairie grass leads you to dramatic ridges, jagged cliffs, and striped rock formations. Enter through the Big Badlands Overlook, where the view captures the beauty of the park.

Follow the Badlands Loop Road (Highway 240), stopping at key overlooks like Yellow Mounds, Panorama Point, and Pinnacles Overlook. Keep your camera ready — bighorn sheep and prairie dogs often appear near the roadside. If you’re traveling with kids, stretch your legs on the Door Trail, a short boardwalk hike that leads into the heart of the formations. You can also make a quick stop at the gift shop, where you can purchase snacks, clothing, and other souvenirs.

Evening: Badlands → Wall → Rapid City (1.5 hours total)

End your day in the legendary town of Wall, home to Wall Drug — a South Dakota icon since the 1930s. Explore its maze of Western shops, art galleries, and quirky roadside attractions. Treat yourself to a homemade donut or a scoop of ice cream, and don’t forget to snap a photo by the famous “Free Ice Water” sign.

After dinner in Wall (try the café for hearty comfort food), continue the final stretch to your accommodations in Rapid City, where you can admire the Black Hills rising in the distance. Get some good sleep for another busy day tomorrow!
Day 4: Rapid City, South Dakota
Driving Time: 1 Hour (45 Miles – Round trip from Rapid City to Mt Rushmore will depend on location of accommodations and activities)
Start your day with South Dakota’s most iconic sight, Mount Rushmore National Memorial. Walk the Presidential Trail for close-up views of the carvings, explore the indoor Lincoln Borglum Visitor Center, and let kids earn their Junior Ranger badge.

After Mt Rushmore, choose between visiting the Reptile Gardens—with outdoor paths and indoor reptile exhibits, Storybook Island—a classic, free park that kids love, an exciting drive through Bear Country USA—where kids stay safely in the car whlie watching black bears, wolves, elk, and bison roam freely, or the Cosmos Mystery Area—a quirky stop where gravity is examined through optical illusions. Finish the day with dinner at a local restaurant and enjoying the sunset over the Black Hills.
Day 5: Rapid City, South Dakota
Driving Time: Around 3 Hours 15 Minutes (140 Miles – Round trip from Rapid City, but could be more or less time / miles depending on accommodations)
After breakfast at your hotel or a local diner, head south into Custer State Park for a morning of wildlife viewing along the Wildlife Loop Road, where common sights include bison, pronghorn, and prairie dogs. Continue to Sylvan Lake for an easy hike or picnic, then–if traveling during the summer–take a slow, scenic drive through Needles Highway, where narrow tunnels and granite spires feel like an adventure. Plan to take your time as the roads are narrow and windy and you will need to watch out for other travelers along the way.

In the afternoon, cool off with an indoor cave tour at Jewel Cave National Monument (or Wind Cave, depending on availability). Guided tours keep kids engaged while introducing geology and underground ecosystems. End the day back in Rapid City with a relaxed dinner and swimming at the hotel pool.
Day 6: Rapid City, South Dakota
Driving Time: 2 Hours 30 Minutes (130 Miles – Round trip from Rapid City, but could be more or less time / miles depending on accommodations)
Spend your morning traveling south through the Black Hills to the town of Hot Springs, known for its naturally heated mineral water. Families will enjoy Evans Plunge, where warm spring-fed pools, slides, and open swim areas make for a relaxing and playful break after several sightseeing days. If your group prefers something quieter, Fall River Hot Springs offers scenic soaking pools overlooking the river and surrounding hills.

After lunch in Hot Springs, head back north to Crazy Horse Memorial. The indoor museum and short film provide important cultural and historical context, while the outdoor viewing areas reveal the scale of the carving still in progress. For the last day on this trip itinerary, we have combined relaxation, learning, and a deeper appreciation for the Black Hills and its history. We hope you enjoy your adventures in South Dakota!
